This month, Lewis Builders is proud to highlight a recent transformation at Carmel Valley Ranch, the Chic Contemporary Condo. This 1980’s remodel brought a fresh, open layout to a previously compartmentalized space and introduced refined finishes with integrated Aging-in-Place elements. With attention to both aesthetics and livability, this project showcases the Lewis Builders team's commitment to creating homes that improve daily life and meet our clients' future needs.
Reimagining the Layout for Optimal Flow
Originally, the condo felt closed off, with each area isolated from the next. Cari Hill, our Director of Interior Design, proposed two concepts, one of which was a plan to relocate the kitchen to the center of the main level. The clients chose this innovative approach, which created a natural cohesion between the kitchen, dining, and living areas and established the kitchen as the focal point.
Repositioning the kitchen also allowed the team to reconfigure adjacent areas like the laundry room for greater efficiency. By adjusting the stair arrangement, the team gained enough room to create a well-equipped, side-by-side laundry area with quartz countertops, a tile backsplash, under-cabinet lighting, and a concealed sink.
Thoughtful, Modern Functionality Throughout
The Lewis Builders team redesigned the primary suite for optimal comfort and utility. One bold decision was to build the closet in a separate area, which allowed the seating and bedroom area to come together. The primary bathroom also got an update, and the configuration allowed for a lot of natural light to come through. A vanity with mirrors is illuminated by integrated sconces. This setup creates a visually striking focal point upon entrance.
Built in 1981, the house originally had very limited mechanical space and electrical wiring that required electrical panel upgrades to meet present-day standards. Our team ensured the systems were updated to support new fixtures, appliances, and motorized shades, along with whole-home Wi-Fi and security enhancements. All had the purpose of bringing convenience and peace of mind to the residents.
Integrated Aging-in-Place Features
Understanding the client’s vision for a home that would serve them for years to come, Lewis Builders incorporated Aging-in-Place (the design concept of improving accessibility and safety for senior living) elements throughout the condo. The clients wanted the versatility of being able to dwell just in the downstairs, so we crafted the main level to allow for single-floor living. In the primary bathroom, we installed a walk-in shower in place of the tub, adding ease of access and safety without sacrificing style.
A Striking Staircase as a Centerpiece
Finally, the new staircase helped shape the overall feel of the living space, opening up room for a cozy seating area that connects naturally with the living room. The staircase itself is a standout feature, with cable railings, solid white oak stair noses, and a custom handrail that complements the white oak flooring. Integrated lighting along the stairs adds ambient warmth while also strengthening safety.
“Our experience with Lewis Builders was exceptional in every way. From start to finish, the team exceeded our expectations, demonstrating remarkable care, kindness, patience, and attention to detail. Each member, from the project manager and demolition crew to the finish carpenters and designers, went above and beyond to make our home truly special. We highly recommend Lewis Builders for projects of any size – they are simply the best!”
Embracing "Change Your Space. Change Your Life.®"
The Chic Contemporary Condo is yet another demonstration of the Lewis Builders team’s commitment to our motto: Change Your Space. Change Your Life.® By transforming this once compartmentalized layout into an open and modern one incorporating Aging-in-Place, we created a home that accommodates both the present comfort and future needs of the homeowner. The client came to us seeking a residence that would elevate their daily living experience now and remain practical and beautiful for years to come, and we were committed to finding creative solutions to bring that vision to life.
